Hi!

We're really looking forward to seeing you at our wedding. Since we know many of our guests are traveling, we've put together this page to give you useful information and also share with you some places that have been special to both of us and that we think you might enjoy.

RSVP

Please use the RSVP card included in your invitation to help us know how many people we may expect.

Or, for your convenience, we welcome a response to our toll-free number,

Directions

By Air

We recommend Southwest Airlines (see sidebar).

Fly into Detroit Metro Airport (DTW). Outside Detroit, only a 20-minute drive from Ann Arbor; come West on I-94.

Rental car, taxi and shared-ride services are listed here.

Southwest service is friendly, cheap, and safe. Furthermore, Bill proposed to Anne on a bench in the Southwest Airlines terminal in the Detroit Metro Airport. When you walk through there, think of us.

By Train

Take Amtrak to Ann Arbor. 1-800-USA-RAIL for reservations. If you let us know you're coming this way, we can have someone pick you up. The station is just north of downtown. The pub right across the street, Casey's, is a lovely place for a bite.

By Car

From the West: Take I-94 East to Ann Arbor. During interchanges in Indiana, follow signs to Detroit. When you reach Ann Arbor, follow the directions given below to The Michigan Union, The Hotels, or Mom and Dad Gay's.

From Canada: take the 401 to the Windsor Bridge, cross (Toll=$3 cdn) and get on I-96 West. Stay on M-14 when it splits from I-96. Take the Downtown Ann Arbor exit off M-14, which puts you on Main St.

Note: when returning to Canada, take the Martin Luther King Ave exit and follow the freeway access road two blocks to get to the last U.S. Gas station before the Bridge back into Canada.

From the Eastern U.S. -either go through Canada at Buffalo and then follow the Canadian directions, or come south around Lake Erie and get on 475/ US 23 at Toledo (be careful, it's confusing!) then follow the directions from the South.

From the North: Take I-75/ US 23 South, stay on US 23 to M 14, take the Downtown Ann Arbor exit, which puts you on Main St.
Turn right on Miller to go to mom and dad Gay's or turn on Huron to get to the Michigan Union or your Hotel.

From the South: Take I-75/23 north, stay on US 23 (475 past Toledo) to Ann Arbor. Take Exit #37B, Washtenaw Ave (west).
To Michigan Union: Turn Left on South University and then Right on State Street and it's on your left.
To Hotels: Stay on Washtenaw as it curves left and becomes Huron. Campus Inn is on your right just past State St. To get to Best Western or Weber's, stay on Huron past Seventh Street and keep left when it splits at the next light. You are now on Jackson. Keep going, under the freeway, then Best Western is on the right and Weber's is on the left.

If you are driving from West of Indiana, we recommend you take 80/94 into Indiana and stop at the Flying J at exit 9A. We always make this stop when coming through and have bought a lot of things at the shop there. It's the cheapest gas you'll find anywhere, honest. If you take the skyway out of Chicago you will bypass this exit.

If you are driving through Canada there is a brand new Flying J at exit 189.

around Michigan Union

The Michigan Union
We will exchange vows in the plaza to the north of the Michigan Union, and retire from there to the second floor for hours douvres in the Pendelton Room, followed by dinner and dancing in the Ballroom. The Billiard Room will be open should you wish to take a break

Please note that the ceremony will be in the Pendelton room if we experience inclement weather.

To the Ceremony/Reception: Take Business 94 (see sidebar) to Fifth Ave (one-way street) turn on Fifth and go South 2 blocks to Liberty. Turn left on Liberty and go East until you are forced to turn right on Thompson. Go across William and Jefferson. There is a circle drive on your left where you can drop off passengers or give your car to the Valet.

Reception
Go around past the fountain to the State Street entrance, up the stairs into the building and on up another flight to the second floor to the Pendelton Room or the Ballroom.

There is a ramp outside the side entrance if you would prefer to skip the stairs and take the elevator up from the lower level.

Parking
We have the parking structure behind the Michigan Union reserved for this event. We are covering the cost and you can either park your own car or let the valet take it at the circle drive next to the plaza. If you would like to park yourself, follow the above instructions to Thompson. The parking structure is on your right. There is a circle drive on your left if you would like to drop off passengers before you park.

Hotels
We have room blocks at three hotels. For reservations, please reference the Gay/Murphy wedding and call by May 21st at the latest.

Campus Inn is located at the corner of Huron and State, which is walking distance from the ceremony and reception, as well as the State Street/Liberty downtown area and Central Campus of the University of Michigan. $122/night +$20 per additional person. (800) 666-8693

Weber's Inn is west of Ann Arbor on Jackson Rd. The restaurant is very nice, and it is convenient to I-94. $92/night. (800) 443-3050

Best Western is located across the street from Weber's on Jackson Rd. A continental breakfast is complementary, but there is only an in-house snack bar, not a full restaurant. Refrigerator and Coffee maker in every room. $62/night. (734) 665-4444

Business 94 -From the West, this is Jackson Rd, which merges with Dexter Ave to become Huron. Huron runs East-West into town, then turns decidedly South and becomes Washtenaw Ave. Washtenaw runs out to US 23, which you can take South to rejoin I-94. Of the hotels in which we have blocks of rooms, Weber's and the Best Western are on Jackson Rd and the Campus Inn is on Huron.

Mom and Dad Gay's
920 Mixtwood
(734) 665-5974

To get to their house from the west: take M-14 from I-94 to the Miller Rd. Exit (it's the first one after they split). Turn right on Miller and go through the light at Maple. You will go down a long hill; as you start to come back uphill you'll pass a school on your left and go through the light at 7th St. Take an immediate left, at Brooks. Go through the stop sign (school entrance); the next street on the left is Mixtwood. Mom and dad's is a blue house with a double garage, third house on the right.

If you are at Weber's Inn, take Jackson Rd. to Stadium, turn left and go to Miller. Turn right and follow the rest of the directions above.

To get there from in town, note that east of Main St, Miller is called Catherine.
To avoid confusion, take Huron west to Ashley, turn right. At the next light (Miller), turn left. Go through the light at First and up the hill. Just before the next light, turn right on Brooks. Then follow the directions above.

While you're in Ann Arbor...

...see something in town. We're having the wedding in Ann Arbor because it's Anne's home town. It's also a pretty neat place.

Hungry?

Zingerman's Zingerman's has been described as the best Deli west of Manhattan and east of San Francisco. Just walk in and take a sniff and you'll know what the buzz is about. We highly recommend it for lunch. 422 Detroit St. 734.663.DELI Take State north from Huron to Kingsley. Turn left. They're at the corner of Kingsley and Detroit Streets. If you can't find street parking, and it's not school hours, turn left on Fifth Ave and then left into the school parking lot. BTW, that is Community High, Anne's alma mater.

Le Dog
On Liberty just north of Division, this little stand serves excellent hot dogs, lemonade and lobster bisque, and absolutely no soft drinks.

The Washtenaw Dairy
As this review notices, "a $1.75 single from Washtenaw Dairy is as big as a $3.50 Baskin Robbins triple". 602 S. Ashley (734) 662-3244. On the corner of Ashley and Jefferson.

The Earle The Earle is a special restaurant, with warm service, light jazz, and delicious food. The family comes here on special occasions, such as Anne's 21st birthday and dinner during the holidays. 121 W. Washington between Main and Ashley (734) 994-0211. Additional parking available between Ashley and First.

Looking for Fun?

The Ann Arbor
Hands-On Museum The Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum is a perfect stop for kids of all ages. 220 East Ann St. 734-995-5437 E. Ann is between Miller and Huron and runs from Division to 1st St. You can park in a lot on Fifth Ave, just across Huron, on the left. (We can say left because Fifth Ave is a one-way street.)

Liberty and State
Take some time to wander around Liberty and State Streets, near where they intersect. On Liberty you'll find The Michigan Theater, a 1920's movie palace that has been restored and shows the most interesting films in town. Even if you don't go to a show here, walk in and ask to see the lobby. Anne's high school graduation was held on stage here in 1992. The Dawn Treader
Book Shop

Across the street is The Dawn Treader Book Shop. Be sure to go through the maze of shelves to the back room, which is where they keep 'humor' and 'science fiction' --Anne used to shelve books for the Dawn Treader, and remembers shelving this entire science fiction section when the store moved here from its former location in a basement across the street.

We should probably mention that Borders began here in 1971. Unfortunately, they have moved from their original State St. location, which was a unique and exciting book store. On the corner of Liberty and Maynard, they now have an espresso cafe and music section and look just like the rest of the chain, only bigger.

Parks
Ann Arbor is an enjoyably green city and has many lovely parks and recreation areas. We'll name a few of our favorites here. West park is on Seventh Street a few blocks from mom and dad's and sports a bandshell, a playground, and lots of grass and trees. Hunt park is at the top of Spring St (turn north off of Miller and drive uphill) and boasts the nicest nighttime view of the city. Delhi Metropark, Bird Hills and Gallop park all front on the Huron River, which runs through the north end of town. That's a lovely river to canoe down, if you're interested. Fuller park and Vets have outdoor pools in addition to lots of playing fields, and Mack school, which is just two blocks from mom and dad Gay's, has a playground and an indoor pool which is open to the public.

In case you were wondering...

Registry

The traditional way to find out if a bride and groom are registered is by word of mouth. Speak to the parents, ask whomever the RSVP is to, etc. We find that the result of this tradition is that we usually fail to find out where a couple is registered, though we may wonder. At least once this has resulted in our having given someone the same thing they got from someone else.

In order to save people the same sense of awkwardness we have faced, we decided to let you know that we are registered at Marshall Fields (formerly Marshall Fields / Dayton / Hudsons) and at Sears.

This is not meant to be a request for gifts nor any pressure to get us something we've registered for. Please remember that the most precious thing to us here is our relationship with you. The greatest gift you can give us is your presence at our wedding and your continued friendship.

Names

Something that can be awkward to ask has to do with names. These days tradition has been pretty much tossed out the window and you never know what the bride and groom will be called after they get married. Well, we'll tell you.

Anne will be taking after her mother; her married name will be Anne Kimberly Gay Murphy, which she plans to sign Anne K.G. Murphy. Gay becomes a middle name, and calling her Anne Murphy will be fine (More than fine... did you ever see the scene in True Romance where the couple gets married and then spends a couple minutes calling each other Mr. and Mrs., enjoying their newly shared last name? This is one of Anne's all-time favorite movie scenes).

Bill's name will still be William J. Murphy. We'll admit to being somewhat traditional, some of the time.

If you have any other questions...

You can reach Bill and Anne by email at home at netmouse@sympatico.ca or by phone at 519-885-4896.

Anne and her sister Sarah
Anne is shown on the right, sitting on the porch swing of her childhood home with her sister Sarah, who will be her Maid of Honor.

Bill Bill is shown obviously enjoying his family's vacation at their cottage in central Illinois.
